About Languages and COGs

There are 29 generic units of work that can be adapted to a specific language. They have been designed to be taught at the same time as the COGs unit of work (HSIE, SciTech, PDHPE and Creative Arts).

There is a broad spectrum of contexts for Languages programs in K‑6, including a range of teaching times (from 2 hours/week to 30 minutes/week) and a variety of languages, including both community and non-community languages.

The development of the Languages units considered:

  • syllabus content
  • existing scope and sequences
  • topics from previous K-6 syllabuses
  • development of language (shown in italics) within unit
  • development of language (shown in italics) across Stages
  • variety of assessment strategies for all skills.

Depending on a school’s setting and needs, the Languages teacher is encouraged to work cooperatively with classroom teachers in planning and programming for each Stage. For example, if the classroom teacher is working on String C with Stage 2, the Languages teacher could modify the generic Languages unit for C Stage 2 to support the teaching and learning.

For each String (A-H) and each Stage (ES1, S1, S2, S3), the Languages Unit has developed a connection description and a sample (generic) unit of work.

The Languages support for COGs includes:

1. a description page for each COG (generic for all languages) which:
  • link the Languages outcomes to the connection focus
  • shows how Languages connect to the main COGs
  • highlights what students learn about and learn to do
  • outlines resources needed, including those from NSW Department of Education and Training
  • highlights the literacy and numeracy connections.

Teachers can use each description page to develop their own unit of work.

2. a unit of work page for each COG (generic for all Languages) showing:

  • a sequence of Language lessons that addresses the outcomes based around the connection focus
  • the depth of knowledge required to address the outcomes
  • assessment that is planned and linked to learning experiences.

The Language-specific consultants have also contextualised many of the generic units into Language-specific sample units, incorporating cultural influences. Click here to access generic Language descriptions and units.
