Touchdown
Touchdown is an adventure for independent readers in primary school
and early high school. It corresponds to Stage 3 in the
NSW K–6 curriculum (year 6).
- Read a sample nonfiction article from Touchdown magazine, and its accompany teaching session.
Touchdown readers explore the highest quality literary texts, including:
- poetry
- stories
- plays
- articles
- activities and recipes
- word games and puzzles
Independent readers demand action, excitement, suspense and drama in their reading material, and Touchdown provides a feast of quality texts, all lavishly illustrated by leading Australian artists commissioned by The School Magazine.
Guiding them through the pleasures of independent reading are the Touchdown character mascots: the "Ed" and the team of three correspondents or 'stringers' who provide the content of the magazine. There's the dreamy Beyonce Horizons (stories and poems); the seasoned world traveller Phyllis Wong (nonfiction from near and far), and the slightly unreliable 'Pencils' Barrymore, who sometimes provides plays (jelly crises permitting).
In 2009 Touchdown readers are enjoying a new 10-part graphic novella, called The Nelly Gang, set in the Australian goldfields.
