A series of case studies in design, technology and cultural diversity to support the Design and Technology, Engineering Studies, Information Processes and Technology and Textile and Design syllabuses. Collaborative development between the DET and the Powerhouse Museum.
School Libraries and Information Literacy
Scan is a quarterly journal produced by the NSW Department of Education andTraining.
Scan focuses on the interaction between information and effective student learning.
Scan contains articles on:
- teachers and teacher-librarians collaborating
- information literacy and supporting reading
- integrating ICT (information communication technology) in teaching and learning
- practical programming and teaching ideas
- practical ideas for library management.
Scan also includes approximately 200 reviews of Internet sites and other resources to help teacher-librarians and teachers to select resources. Resources are available online some 10 weeks after the publication of Scan.

The Home Economics Institute of Australia (HEIA) has published 12 gorgeous textiles posters featuring six fabrics and six cultural costumes. They are available for purchase at www.heia.com.au. The collection of food posters is also available.
Excursions
Engineering Studies at the Powerhouse Discovery Centre
The Powerhouse Discovery Centre: Collection Stores at Castle Hill is a publicly-accessible museum storage and collection care facility. Located on a 2.8 hectare site in Castle Hill, six large warehouse-style buildings house one of the world’s greatest collections of science, technology, design, decorative arts and social history. The Display Store, the centerpiece of the site, is a museum which houses thousands of objects from historic steam engines, cars, trams, planes, to smaller objects displayed in thematic drawer and shelf units.
Personal and Public Transport/Aeronautical Engineering is a 90-120 minute, tailored educational program for students of Stage 6 Engineering Studies. The program, available from Term 2, May 2008, Tuesdays–Fridays, 10.00am–4.00pm will include an introductory multi-media presentation addressing both Modules. Tours of The Display Store and ‘behind the scenes’ storage areas will focus on transport from the past to the present including bicycles, horse-drawn vehicles, trams, buses, trains, steam, electric and petrol vehicles, motorcycles and aircraft.

Sydney Olympic Park: Design Scene Investigators
Technology students visiting Sydney Olympic Park can now become ‘Design Scene Investigators’ for a day and explore issues about environmentally sustainable design practices. The new Stage 4 Landscape & Enviro Design excursion, developed in consultation with the Technology Unit Curriculum K-12 Directorate, is based around the unique landscape of the Park. The excursion offers students a range of hands-on and curriculum-based activities that involve smart water and soil management using equipment and interpretive models. Activity stations include practical challenges such as planting, pruning and garden design; water filtration, soil sampling and testing; and developing a design concept.
