Design and Technology

Design and Technology is an elective 100 or 200-hour course that develops a student's ability for innovative and creative thought through the planning and development of design projects related to real-life needs and situations. Students identify needs and opportunities, research and investigate existing solutions, analyse data and information, generate, justify and evaluate ideas, and experiment with tools, materials and techniques to manage and develop design projects. Through the development of their design projects and the analysis of the design work of others students reflect on the impact of design on society and the environment.

The Stage 5 Design and Technology syllabus builds upon the knowledge, skills and experiences developed in mandatory technology education from kindergarten to Year 8 through the K-6 Science and Technology syllabus and the Technology (Mandatory) Years 7-8 syllabus. Students may focus further on this subject matter in Years 11-12 through subjects such as: Design and Technology, Engineering Studies, Industrial Technology, Textiles and Design, Technological and Applied Studies Life Skills.

During the 200-hour course students will develop knowledge, understanding and skills to develop a minimum of three and a maximum of six design projects that address at least three focus areas of design. Students will be engaged in a variety of practical experiences that culminate in a designed solution and documentation. The Board of Studies NSW Years 7-10 Syllabus Course Descriptors document provides a detailed course description, including School Certificate requirements.

The Design and Technology Years 7-10 syllabus and support materials are available on the Board of Studies NSW web site.
