Cutting Edge Science

A series of CSIRO teacher development lectures from prominent scientists spaced throughout the year aimed at high school teachers with topics linked directly to the stage 4 to 6 syllabuses in Science.  This series looks to be a must see with something sure to interest just about everybody. The Children’s Medical Research Institute (CMRI) provides extensive support to science teachers.

 

Science Teachers’ Forum: Wednesday 23 May 2007

Venue: Children’s Medical Research Institute, Westmead, Sydney.

Time: 9.45am-4.30pm.

Content: This one-day Science Teachers’ Forum will focus on the use of Gene Technology in medical research.

Cost: $55 to cover the cost of refreshments and comprehensive lecture notes.

 

School Visits: Talks suitable for Yr 10 and Yr 12 students are available free of charge to any high school within commuting distance of Sydney. Content focuses on applications of gene technology and genetics (including transgenics, gene therapy, cloning and stem cell research) but can be tailored to suit teachers’ needs.

 

Jeans for Genes Day: Friday 3 August 2007, raising funds for the Children’s Medical Research Institute. Worksheets suitable for Stage 5 science and HSC are available on the jeans4genes and cmri.com.au websites.

CREST Professional development opportunity

for primary and secondary teachers

Date:  Wednesday 21st February                            

Time:  3:30pm for a 3:45pm start

          Workshop should finish around 5:00pm

Venue: The Henry Lawson High School, South Street,   Grenfell

A special workshop/information session for all interested teachers is being held in your area by the CREST Officer. 

Are you:

  • Wanting students to investigate, understand and communicate science through their own open-ended investigations?
  • Wanting to extend your students in science and technology?
  • Innovative, enthusiastic and seeking new stimuli for your students?

If any of the above apply to you, then this is the workshop for you.

Teachers incorporating CREST Awards into their Science teaching program provide a challenging and motivating experience for students as well as gaining valuable feedback regarding the abilities of their students in this area.

CREST is suitable for students of all abilities.

CREST is ideal for providing scaffolding for students and teachers while carrying out Student Research Projects for Stages 4 and 5.

CREST focuses on skills in investigating, designing and making for Stages 1 to 3.

If you are not yet including open-ended project work in your teaching program this workshop will provide you with strategies to help you do so.
