Aboriginal perspectives in Science 7-12
Welcome to the "Aboriginal perspectives" in Science page
The Science Years 7-10 Syllabus provides opportunities to develop understanding of some aspects of Indigenous culture. The syllabus also provides opportunities in teaching and learning programs for the inclusion of Indigenous contexts relevant to areas such as ecology, the environment, and astronomy.
NEW RESOURCES
Living Knowledge
The Living Knowledge website was developed as part of an Australian Research Council (ARC) project: Indigenous knowledge and Western science pedagogy: a comparative approach. One of the project aims was to determine the most effective ways of incorporating Aboriginal and Indigenous knowledge within the NSW secondary school science curricula.
The website features a case study on Indigenous knowledge and includes online resources for teachers, students, researchers & interested others.
Further support materials for schools incorporating an Aboriginal community perspective in Years 7–10 Science have been developed as part of the NSW Department of Education 'Science in Context' contribution to this project.
Ideas for using the Living Knowledge website with students.
Making String
An ethnobotanical learning journey on the south coast of NSW.
This article uses the cultural practice of string making to explore the thinking and decision making processes that take place within such practices and the relationships to western science understandings.
Aboriginal Perspectives in Science
This Board of Studies project developed resources to support Science teachers in integrating, and in dealing with, Indigenous cross-curriculum content in culturally appropriate ways and in authentic contexts.
