Global Strategy on Diet, Physical Activity and Health

The World Health Organisation has developed the Global Strategy on Diet, Physical Activity and Health through a wide-ranging series of consultations with all concerned stakeholders. This web site will provide you with the Global Strategy that was endorsed by the WHO in May 2004.

This web site includes resources and information to make regular physical activity “cool” for tweens (9-13 year olds) and a fun thing to do. There are also VERB materials for organisations that do not directly provide programs to tweens but can promote the importance of regular physical activity, such as through communications, advocacy, policy change, and training of program providers.

Nutrition Australia

Nutrition Australia have released a re-vamped version of the Healthy Living Pyramid that focuses on the theme Eating well: Active longer. It includes information about a balanced diet as well as messages about regular physical activity.

Women set to become fastest sprinters

This online article provides an interesting perspective on the gains in performance historically of male and female sprinters. It would make an interesting discussion starter for Stage 6 PDHPE - Improving performance.

Various lesson ideas and fact sheets are provided here. Teachers can also submit their own lesson ideas or participate in a moderated teachers' forum.

Reach Out!  

Provides teachers and students with fact sheets and access to support services in the area of adolescent health, in particular mental health.

Queensland Health Youth Site

This website is intended as a resource with information that adolescents can use for their studies as well as activities to help them make healthy choices.

Make a Noise project web site contains information on a wide range of topics including healthy bodies, study, relationships, health services, healthy minds and drug issues in a student friendly format.

Theshare web site (sexual health and relationships education), is part of the SHine SA web site. The web site includes a range of information about sexual health and relationships education. Under the resources section you will find some interactive scenarios that will be ideal for use with students when discussing sexual decision-making, choices and consequences.

About date rape

This newly launched web site provides information on sexual assault, date rape and dating violence, relevant laws in NSW, stories and links to similar websites.

Reach Out!

This web site is dedicated to supporting young people 15-24 years old. The site contains sections for sorting stuff out, finding help or just chilling out. The site has stories from young people, including celebrities, who talk about some of the challenges that they have had to deal with and what strategies they used to cope.

Choice - Health issues

Published by the Australian Consumers' Association, this site currently has a comparison of health insurance policies. This section will be ideal for the HSC Core 1 topic of Health Priorities in Australia. There are also sections looking at physical activity and eating patterns which are useful resources for the new syllabus.

Dietary Guidelines for Children and Young People

This site is maintained by Nutrition Australia and contains the latest facts on nutrition and healthy food habits for children and young people. The recommended dietary guidelines for children and young people can be downloaded from this site for use with classes exploring content under healthy food habits in Stage 4.

EdNA Online is a service that aims to support and promote the benefits of the Internet for learning, education and training in Australia. EdNA Online provides two key functions:

  • a directory about education and training in Australia
  • a database of web-based resources useful for teaching and learning.

The NSW Centre Advancement of Adolescent Health (NSW CAAH)

NSW CAAH was established to create better health and well-being for all young people aged 12 - 24 in New South Wales. The Centre is situated in the Children's Hospital at Westmead, and is funded by NSW Health. The web site has recently been launched and will eventually provide a wealth of resources related to adolescent health issues.

BBC Online: Human body and mind

This interactive web site includes a variety of sections that focus on the workings of the human body as well as the mind. It includes interactive games that explore how the muscles and organs work as well as a section on puberty that explores the changes to the body during adolescence.

Making Multicultural Australia

The NSW Department of Education and Training in co-operation with the Board of Studies and the University of Technology, Sydney has developed a new website, Making Multicultural Australia. The website brings together resources from the internationally recognised triple CD-ROM package of the same name and new resources and activities to support the implementation of NSW syllabuses.

The web site provides a range of resources that could easily be incorporated into teaching and learning activities which inform students about Australia's cultural diversity and promote community harmony.

Staff Matters

The Staff Matters resource provides information and professional development ideas for staff health and wellbeing. This section of the MindMatters website is in a development and consultative phase during 2005.

The activities are intended to enable individuals and groups to begin to understand some of the currents of thought about health and wellbeing.
