Stage 6 PDHPE (2010) - Frequently Asked Questions
What’s changing?
There will be amendments to course content and some changes to assessment procedures for the 2010 Preliminary and HSC PDHPE Courses. This means that from Term 4, 2009 teachers will need to be teaching the amended HSC Course with changes to assessment requirements. At the start of 2010 teachers will need to commence teaching the amended Preliminary PDHPE course content with changes in assessment requirements.
Why has the course content for Stage 6 PDHPE been changed?
Teachers have expressed concerns for some time about the amount of content in the course and the Board of Studies NSW responded to these concerns by reviewing the content and exploring ways of reducing content. Following discussions with the education sectors and professional associations, draft amendments were presented to the Board of Studies NSW. The Board of Studies NSW approved these changes for implementation in the 2010 Preliminary and 2010 HSC courses.
Why introduce changes to the HSC and Preliminary Course content for the same year of implementation?
At the same time the Board of Studies NSW was reviewing PDHPE content the overall assessment requirements for Stage 6 were being reviewed (see question below). It was felt it was more appropriate to introduce all the changes concurrently rather than run the risk of confusion by staggering the changes.
Will students who complete the Preliminary PDHPE course in 2009 or before be placed at a disadvantage when studying HSC PDHPE in 2010.
While there are differences between the old and new Preliminary courses the impact on students ability to successfully complete HSC work will be minimal. All students will be in a similar situation and the examination committee will be aware of the changes.
One area teachers may need to support students is ensuring they have some understanding of the concept of health promotion at a community level before starting amended HSC Core 1 content.
Why has assessment changed?
The Board of Studies NSW responded to concerns expressed by parents, students, teachers and the community about the assessment demands on Year 12 students. A discussion paper was circulated in 2008 which discussed strategies such as increased reading time in exams, greater guidance to students about response lengths, changes to examination times, changes to internal assessment requirements and other changes to assessment. Following consultation the Board of Studies NSW agreed to a range of changes which are outlined at:

There still seems to be a lot of content. Where are the savings?
Many teachers have commented that the amended Preliminary content allows much more time for in depth study and practical application in the amended course. The change to two Cores and the adjustment of content has freed up significant chunks of time.
The reorganisation of content in the HSC course also provides some significant savings in time by providing some more focussed study of issues and the freedom to select contexts rather than covering them all.
