Locating health services in the local community
In Stage 4 PDHPE, students explore the location of health information, products and services in their local area. The following activity could be a general research task or could focus on services for a particular health issue such as mental health or drug use.
- Divide the class into small groups and allocate a particular health issue to each group e.g. sexual health, mental health, physical activity, drug use.
- Provide groups with a template for collecting contact information for all local services related to their allocated health issue.
- Ask groups to locate all of the identified services available to the community on the map of the local area. Use a key to distinguish between the services for different health issues.
- Brainstorm as a class some of the barriers that might prevent young people from accessing these health services e.g. location, transport, cost, confidentiality.
- Propose a range of strategies to overcome the barriers to accessing health services.
- Ask students to design an “ideal” community map, indicating the location of a range of health services and facilities to support health and physical activity for young people. When designing the “ideal” community map, students need to consider some of the barriers to accessing health services and strategies that may overcome these barriers.
