Teaching literacy in PDHPE

In PDHPE lessons, we use a variety of stimulus materials including written, spoken and visual texts. Written texts are the materials that students are required to read and understand to be able to participate in a lesson. Spoken texts are instructions, explanations, descriptions or other orally presented information that students interpret as they listen. Visual texts can be demonstrations, videos, diagrams and charts which are frequently used in classroom practice. Literacy involves students being able to interpret and create a range of texts successfully.

This section of the web site will provide support for the teaching of literacy in PDHPE classes.

Teaching visual critical literacy in PDHPE

By the time a student leaves high school they will have spent twice as much time in front of the television as in the classroom. Television has become a medium that influences every aspect of children’s lives – from the clothes they wear, to the way they talk to their friends.

With the growth of technology and information, along with rapidly changing knowledge in health literature, it is important that in our learning area students develop skills in critical literacy to enable them to become astute consumers of health products and services.

Within PDHPE there are many opportunities for students to develop their skills of visual critical literacy. For example, students could analyse:

  • commercials on television and in the print media to develop an understanding of how marketing techniques are used to promote products
  • popular magazines to explore stereotypes, gendered expectations
  • campaigns to promote health messages.

Teaching literacy in PDHPE in Year 7 resource

Literacy teaching for Year 7 in the PDHPE key learning area is covered in this document, including a definition of literacy, and the integration of literacy skills into teaching strategies. The place of Year 7 in the continuum of literacy development is pinpointed, followed by assessment, planning and programming for literacy teaching.

Strategies in the teaching of two major themes (Grappling with growth and Moving and grooving) are provided, and faculty participation in a whole school approach to literacy completes the text.
