Integrating ICT in PDHPE

The 2003 PDHPE Years 7–10 Syllabus makes explicit statements about the types of ICT that are to be incorporated into the teaching and learning experiences in PDHPE. This ensures that ICT are embedded in the curriculum in order to increase the level of ICT knowledge, skills and understandings expected of students in PDHPE.

Through the study of PDHPE, students in Stages 4 and 5 are expected to enhance their ability to utilise ICT in both health and physical activity contexts.  As students work towards achieving the syllabus outcomes, they should be provided with opportunities to become competent, discriminating and creative users of ICT.

The  PDHPE Years 7–10 Syllabus has included the following ICT skills in the essential content:

  • enter data into a prepared template format and analyse
  • import, mailmerge and reformat data/fields
  • generate specific reports with regards to ethical issues e.g. print without address and details
  • develop an understanding of ethical issues in the use of ICT
  • use simulation software to make choices and decisions as a member of a team.

For example, in Stage 5 students learn to “enter performance data into a prepared spreadsheet template, format and analyse with consideration of ethical issues e.g. use, interpretation and publication of data.”

Here are some sample activities that demonstrate the use of ICT in PDHPE.

Activity 1 – Using spreadsheets

Activity 2: Creating a database

Interactive whiteboard lesson sequences

There are many other opportunities to enhance the learning that takes place in PDHPE lessons through the integration of ICTs. The following sections provide some practical ideas for integrating ICT in PDHPE.
