Using spreadsheets in PDHPE
In this activity, students will enter data into a prepared template, format and analyse the data, generate specific reports with regards to ethical issues, and demonstrate an understanding of ethical issues related to the use of ICT.
Task:
Students analyse their physical activity levels and make comparisons against the National Physical Activity Guidelines (refer to the Getting Australia Active article in this issue). They then make suggestions about how they could increase their physical activity levels. Students undertake the following steps to complete the task.
- Record in a journal or logbook all structured and incidental physical activity participated in over the period of one week.
- Use a prepared template to enter the data from their journal. A suggested template is illustrated below. Teachers need to make a decision whether students will insert the formula into the spreadsheet themselves or whether the formula will be included as part of the spreadsheet template. The spreadsheet could be given as a hard copy to students in order for them to prepare the data before entering it into an electronic copy. This will be particularly useful if access to computers is limited.

- Distribute the National Physical Activity Guidelines to students. Ask the students to identify aspects of the guidelines that they need to gather information on, in order to compare their results to the guidelines. For example, amount of moderate activity per day, amount of vigorous activity each week, number of inactive days each week, etc.
- Compare the data gathered on the personal physical activity levels to the National Physical Activity Guidelines. This could be illustrated through the use of graphs generated from the completed spreadsheet.
- Analyse their findings and formulate suggestions of how they could include more physical activity in their daily life.
- Combine the data from all students into a single spreadsheet and create a report that demonstrates an understanding of the ethical issues involved in publishing data collated using ICT. For example, the names of students are removed to ensure that the physical activity data is anonymous. Ask the students to identify why it is important for the data to remain confidential. Discuss with the class other ethical issues that may arise from collecting and publishing data within PDHPE.
