Nihongo Tanken Centre General Information

The Tanken Centre has a different focus for each stage of learning.

• Primary First Contact - Japan

• Years 7 and 8 Discovering Japanese Life

• Years 9 and 10 Japanese Adventure

• Year11 Virtual Japanese Experience

• Year 12 Turning Japanese

Each school's program is customised to reflect exactly the ability level and learning experience of the students. Each individual class program is supported by pre-excursion and post-excursion materials.

Cost
The cost of a visit to the Centre is:

$28.00 per student (Non-government and interstate schools)
NSW government school students pay a discounted rate of $14 per student.

The fee covers the cost of:

Morning tea of juice and せんべい (rice crackers)
Equipment for activities
Pre-excursion and post-excursion teaching resource packs

Optional CD-ROM $12.00

The CD-ROM contains:

Digital photos of the students participating in the activities at the Centre the work which the students complete during the technology sessions
Digital photos of items in and around the Tanken Centre
Resources for teachers to access and incorporate technology into the teaching and learning of languages Please indicate on the booking form if you would like to order the CD-Rom for your school.

Lunch options
Obentoo （おべんとう） (Lunch packs) $9.00 per Obentoo （おべんとう）
A minimum number of 15 obentoo is required for an order to be delivered to the Centre.

Obentoo Type A consists of やきそば(fried noodles), まきずし(rolled sushi), chicken teriyaki, potato salad and えだまめ(boiled soybeans).
Obentoo Type B おべんとう　is a vegetarian version which substitutesあげだしどうふfried tofu for the meat component.
Obentoo Type C consists of いなりすし(fried bean curd pockets)，まきずし(rolled sushi)，おこのみやき(savoury pancake)，えだまめ(boiled soybeans).
A gluten-free bentoo is also available.
Students can bring their own lunch. With all lunch options students should bring their own drinks to the Centre. There are no facilities for purchasing food or drinks once students arrive at the Centre.

Onigiri （おにぎり）(rice balls)
$3.00 per student Students can participate in the making of Onigiri （おにぎり）to have with their Obentoo （おべんとう）or　their own lunch. Onigiri （おにぎり）are made at the Centre and form part of the activities within the program. If your school chooses to make Onigiri （おにぎり）the whole group must participate. Please indicate on the booking form the numbers required and confirm with the Centre at least a week prior to the excursion.

How to book into the centre
Telephone the Centre to confirm a date for your excursion. Complete the booking form with detailed information about your students and their language levels. Fax the booking form and the Centre Information Sheet to the Centre to confirm the booking. Please note: the Centre Information Sheet must be signed by the school principal.

Pre-excursion materials can be accessed from the website or mailed to your school.

Centre staff will liaise with you about the details of your excursion.

Names of visiting students and staff and definite numbers for catering need to be provided at least one week prior to the excursion.

A program and tax invoice will be sent to you on receipt of final numbers. Please note;

Bookings are limited to 3 per school per year, including those combined with other schools.

A cancellation fee of $4.00 per student will be charged if an excursion is cancelled less than 4 weeks prior to the excursion date.

The minimum number of students catered for is 15. Schools with groups less than 15 should discuss their individual circumstances with Centre staff. However, groups may be combined with other schools where possible to maximise access to all students. Rules of the Centre

Shoes are to be removed on entering the Centre and stored with bags and personal belongings in the entrance area. Slippers are provided to wear on the wooden floors in the Centre. Slippers are to be removed on entering the tatami room. Socks or stockings are to be worn on the tatami. No bare feet.

Eating and drinking are prohibited in the Centre except in the designated lunch areas. Chewing gum is not permitted at any time.

Students are asked to take care when passing the paper screens as they are very fragile.

All visitors to the Centre must refrain from smoking inside the school grounds. Roles and responsibilities of the supervising teacher(s): Before the excursion the supervising teacher will:

Ensure that students understand the rules of the Centre

Discuss with Centre staff students’ prior language levels giving as much detail as possible to ensure appropriate programming

Prepare students to answer simple questions about themselves using the language they have previously learnt and the pre-excursion material provided once the booking has been confirmed

Prepare students for a day where only Japanese will be used

Motivate students to actively participate in the day’s program.

At the Centre the supervising teacher will:

be included in the program as a staff member.
supervise students during activities, lunch and morning tea breaks
ensure that students do not enter the white pebbled area of the garden.
ensure students understand and follow the rules of the Centre
assist Centre staff by motivating and supervising students as they participate in activities at the Centre. At the Centre the accompanying teacher will be responsible for the behaviour and discipline of the students at all times. To ensure that students are able to participate fully in the program, any disruptive students will be referred to their teacher. The participating school accepts responsibility for damage caused by irresponsible behaviour.

How to get to the Centre
The Nihongo Tanken Japanese Language Centre is in the grounds of Kirrawee High School which is in Hunter Street, Kirrawee. The Centre is located towards the back of the school, next to the library. Large buses should park in Hunter Street and school groups should enter the Centre via Kirk Crescent. Kirrawee is 35 minutes by train from Central Station on the Illawarra line. The Centre is a 15 minute walk from the station. Once you exit Kirrawee Station, turn left and follow Oak Road until the end. At the end of Oak Road, cross Forest Road into a lane. Follow the lane until the end, crossing a grassed area. This turns into Johnston Avenue. Turn left and walk about 100 metres. Between house numbers 32 and 34, turn right into Putland Close and left into a pathway alongside the school oval. Kirrawee High School is on the right hand side.
