How can I type in Asian fonts on my computer?

For Macintosh computers running System 9

  • Insert the Operating System disk and select Custom Install. It is then possible to select the Language kits and choose the required language(s) from the list. Complete the installation and restart. For further information try: http://www.nihongoweb.com/Computing/JLK.html

For Macintosh computers running OS X

  • Open System Preferences and click International. Drag the language you want to use to the top of the list. (If you don't see the language, click Edit.)
  • Select a script appropriate for your language then choose a text behavior from the Behaviors pop-up menu.
  • To select the keyboard and input methods you use, click the Input Menu tab.
  • You can also display dates, times, numbers, and currency according to the conventions of your region.
  • There are additional font packages on the Mac OS X Install Disc 2 CD.

For Windows PC computers

Windows 98 and 2000 require a free download from Global IME. Computers running on Windows XP require an installation from the System disk and adjustments in the Regional and Language Options in the Control Panel. For further information try: http://www.mltaq.asn.au/mltaq/japfonts.htm

How can I find the character for a Euro?

For Macintosh computers

You can find and produce all the characters in each font installed on your computer with Key Caps (from the Apple menu on System 9 and in the Utilities in OS X). You can also use Key Caps to find special characters and symbols such as the Euro?

For Windows or Macintosh computers

When using Microsoft Word or PowerPoint, it is also possible to go to Insert, then Symbol and find the required characters or symbols.

How can I type French accents on my computer?

For Macintosh computers

Using Key Caps (from the Apple menu on System 9 and in the Utilities in OS X), it is possible to see the combinations used with the Option key to produce most accents.

For Windows computers

Insert then Symbol can be used for all characters and accented letters. The list of shortcuts using the ALT key is available at on the Professional Support and Curriculum Languages site.

Can I translate foreign words on my computer?

For Macintosh computers

Using the Translation channel in Sherlock, you can translate words and short phrases between a number of different languages.

For example, you can translate "apple" from English to French, German, Italian, Spanish, and Portuguese.
