HSIE professional learning courses 2009

(Registration for all courses is online – please note that course fees apply to most workshops)

A variety of workshops are being offered in 2009 to support the professional development of teachers of Commerce, Geography, History and Legal Studies and teachers involved in the Assessment of all HSIE HSC Courses. A course for aspiring and experienced Head Teachers of HSIE faculties is also offered for 2009.

In semester two, workshops supporting teachers with the introduction of laptops for learning in their classrooms as part of the Digital Education Revolution - NSW will be offered. Information about course dates and registration will be added to the professional learning area of Curriculum Support (see link below).

The Education Section of the NSW Parliament will again be conducting its popular series of free, Sydney CBD based, professional development days - for teachers of Stage 4 and 5 Commerce, History, Geography, and Stage 6 Legal Studies.

In addition to the above, regional workshops on Political Processes, Civics and Citizenship are being offered for the first time. These workshops are designed for teachers of Commerce but are also relevant to teachers of Stage 5 History and Geography. They explore teaching about the structure of government, the making of laws, political action and decision making and participation in the democratic process. Free print and DVD Resources will be distributed and evaluated at both CBD and regional workshops and information about interactive resources and how to access then will be explained.

A series of workshops on HSC Assessment is also planned for 2009 and 2010. The 2009 Mapping and Refining HSIE Assessment Tasks Workshops - focus on the mapping of assessment tasks to NSW Board of Studies requirements and on refining the design of tasks – including ensuring compatibility between outcomes, task description, rubric and marking criteria.

The workshop for Head Teachers: Leading the HSIE Faculty 7-12 is for experienced and aspiring Head Teachers working in an HSIE faculty in secondary schools. Topics covered will include changes to curriculum, leading and managing your faculty and evaluation and planning strategies. Strategies for supporting quality teaching and learning in the HSIE key learning area will also be covered.
