Semester 2
A variety of workshops are being offered to support the professional development of teachers of Geography, History, Commerce and Legal Studies.
The Education Section of the NSW Parliament will be conducting a series of professional development days for Commerce, Geography, History teachers of Stages 4 and 5 and Legal Studies teachers of Stage 6 in second semester 2008.
Information for each course is listed below. There is no course fee – morning tea and lunch are provided. Schools will need to meet any teacher relief costs. Each of these is a one day in-service. Numbers are strictly limited to the first 40 responses for each date. Use of public transport is recommended as the venue is in the Sydney CBD and parking is not provided. available.
History 7 – 10
Date: November 14, Course Code: 6076, Time: 8:45am – 3:00pm, Location: Sydney CBD
Civics and citizenship Strategies fro Stage 4 and 5 History is designed History 7-10 to support History teachers, particularly beginning teachers with ideas and resources for teaching Civics and Citizenship in Stage 5 History including using the Parliament of New South Wales as a Site Study resource for teachers and students and discussing the impact of Constitutions, Referendums and Elections on 20th Century Australia. Each workshop will also focus on a particular syllabus topic and include a guest speaker.
Geography 7 - 10
Date: December 3, Course Code: 6079, Time: 8:45am – 3:00pm, Location: Sydney CBD
Civics and citizenship Strategies fro Stage 4 and 5 Stage 4 & 5 Geography is designed with a focus on the civics and citizenship aspects embedded in the Geography 7 – 10 syllabus, in particular aspects of decision making and democracy relating to the Stage 5 syllabus focus and areas and ideas and resources for teaching about global citizenship in Stage 4. The course also aims to introduce Geography teachers to the Parliament of NSW as a resource for teaching in geography. Workshops include resource ideas and guest speakers.
Commerce 7 – 10
Date: December 5, Course Code: 6080, Time: 8:45am – 3:00pm, Location: Sydney CBD
Civics and Citizenship Strategies for Commerce is designed to provide an overview of the democratic process linking to the legal and political strands of the Commerce Syllabus (Parliament and the Law – Core 2.1; Political Involvement – Option 6)
As well as provide ideas and resources for teaching about: the democratic process; structure of government; the Australian Constitution and the law. The workshop includes opportunities for teachers to program ideas and hear from a Member of Parliament about their role and how they can be used as a classroom resource. On sitting days the course includes a visit to question time.
Legal Studies
Date: November 26, Course Code: 6077, Time: 8:45am – 3:00pm, Location: Sydney CBD
The Democratic Process and the Law: Teaching and learning Strategies for Legal Studies is a new course designed to provide legal Studies teachers with an overview of the legal / political strands of the Legal Studies Syllabus and ideas and resources for teaching the Preliminary Course: Topic 2 – Sources of Law; Topic 3 – The Constitutional System of Australia; Topic 6 – Legal Controls on State Power. Participants will have an opportunity to hear about the law making process from a Member of Parliament and also visit Question Time on Sitting Days.
