Information for teachers and the opportunity to register your interest  below for the  2009 Know the Deal video competition

The NSW Office of Industrial Relations ran its inaugural Know the Deal video competition in 2008. The competition aimed to teach students in years 7-10 about their rights and responsibilities in the workplace.

Students were asked to produce a video, no more than two minutes in length, which would appeal to their peers, while promoting the availability of the Young People at Work website together with an important workplace message.

The task was developed with assistance and support from the DET Curriculum K-12 Directorate who provided guidance on its alignment with appropriate school curricula.

Twenty students and their teachers from the six winning NSW schools attended Parliament House in October to receive their prizes.

John Skillington from James Fallon High School, first prize winners in the regional school category, said that the whole experience with Office of Industrial Relations has been exceptional and worthwhile.

“We enter a couple of competitions a year, mainly those that are relevant to the syllabus and reward the students for their efforts and the Know the Deal competition fully achieved these aims.  Our students really enjoyed the project.

Karl Pico from Normanhurst Boys High School, that achieved second prize in the metropolitan school category, added that all his students enjoyed the activity, as it gave them an opportunity to integrate technology, creativity and knowledge of the workplace issues and confirmed that they will definitely be doing this activity again.

The two winning entries from 2008 can be viewed at www.youngpeopleatwork.nsw.gov.au.

The Office of Industrial Relations is planning to run the competition again in 2009 and schools are encouraged to think about entering their students in this fun learning activity.

If you are interested in taking part in 2009, please register your interest by emailing Anna Flynn at anna.flynn@oir.commerce.nsw.gov.au
