Information for schools wishing to attend
9th World Metropolis Conference 2008
Schools are invited to register their interest in participating in one or more sessions. As places are limited, schools will be informed of the success of their nomination in the week commencing 22 September.
Please refer to ‘The Important Information’ at the end of this document.

DRAFT PROGRAM
Schools may attend one or more of the following sessions:
The Opening Ceremony 9.00am to 10.30am
By attending the Opening Ceremony, students will be able to witness the opening of an international conference which will explore major themes including climate change, connecting with Asian cities, social sustainability and urban renewal.
The Speakers include Australian political leaders who are welcoming delegates to our city and experts drawn from leaders of major cities from around the world. The keynote address at the opening ceremony will given by Mr Wim Elfrink, Chief Globalisation Officer, Cisco from Bangalore.
Connecting Cities Plenary Session on Global Networks 1.30pm – 3.00pm
This session will explore the connections of global cities including flows of capital, tourism and business networks.
The session will investigate the place of Sydney as a global city, explore the connections of global cities and examine how new and old technology addresses different levels of involvement in global networks.

Students learn to:

- What are the challenges of living in mega cities
- What is a world city and why are they so important
- What will the city be like in the future
Climate Change Plenary Session 3.30pm – 5.00pm
This session will address the environmental and economic consequences of climate change with a focus on the sustainable development of cities. Three keynote speakers will discuss the following:
Ÿthe latest and most reliable data to which alert cities to the urgency of climate change and resulting pressures on the built environment
Ÿthe potential for decisive and practical solutions to climate change
Ÿ how city leaders and the private sector can exchange expertise and determine best practice solutions for climate change
Keynote Speakers
Dr Rajendra Pachauri: was elected chair of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change in 2002, which won the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize alongside Al Gore.
Since 1981, Dr Pachauri has led the international science and technology research organisation, the Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), and in 2001 he was awarded India's highest civilian award, the Padman Bushan, for distinguished service to the environment.

Climate Change and Cities 9.00am to 10.30am TBC
Urban Development in China 10.00 – 10.30 TBC
Urban Development in India 10.30- 11.00am TBC
These sessions provide an opportunity for students and teachers to learn from leading international experts as they discuss their work. During the sessions, DET students will have opportunity to pose questions and engage in discussions with visiting experts. A limited number of schools will be able to participate in these sessions via Video conference, allowing students in remote locations to actively participate

The Important Information
Cost: There is no cost to attend the Metropolis Congress 2008. Transport to and from the venue will be the responsibility of the school.
Venue: Bayside Auditorium or Gallery B, Darling Harbour
Students as ambassadors: Students attending the Metropolis Congress 2008 will have the opportunity to participate in a prestigious event for our city. It is important that students recognise their role as ambassadors for our city and maintain high standards of behaviour at all times.
Food and Drink: Food and drink will not be available to students or teachers at the conference venue. Facilities will be open in the Darling Harbour precinct.
Supervision: A supervising teacher must be responsible for the students at all times. Students must remain seated in the venue throughout each session.
Uniform: School uniform is to be worn by all students.
Limited Availability of Seats: All students and teachers attending must be registered with the Department of Education and Training as places at the conference venue are limited.
Teachers will receive detailed information regarding movement of students into the venue closer to the conference. It is expected there will be a dedicated entrance for students to facilitate registration of conference delegates.
