Tomaree High School

Context

Tomaree High School is a large comprehensive school at Salamander Bay on the Tomaree Peninsula. It is approximately 50 minutes north of Newcastle and was established in 1998, superceding the old Nelson Bay High School. There are approximately 1 300 students drawn from 5 feeder primary schools, one of which is located on the same site as the high school, and about 80 staff. The school emphasises academic rigour and promotes excellence in academic, sporting and cultural pursuits. There is also a significant emphasis on student welfare, technology and vocational education within the school.

The English faculty is committed to developing student achievement through implementation of the Quality Teaching model and development of Blooms/Multiple Intelligences units of work. The Quality Teaching model is in its infancy at Tomaree, having been introduced this year through staff meetings, faculty meetings and the staff development day.

Unit proposal

The unit titled Deadline is designed to give students in Year 10 experience of Shakespearean drama. It will provide a departure from the traditional study methods to use a hands-on approach to develop student awareness of the world of William Shakespeare and his play, Macbeth.

The unit is being designed to extend and motivate students of differing abilities to conduct and enjoy an in-depth study using traditional and technological based research methods. The students when presenting their findings will be required to use computer generated reporting and presentation systems, therefore meeting the ICT component of the Stage 5 syllabus.

The unit is also being designed to require students while working independently, or in groups, to compose differing writing tasks using a range of types of texts. These tasks can be adapted to meet the skill level of the particular class and will be presented to the students in a Blooms/Multiple Intelligences grid.
