Fairvale High School
Context
Fairvale High School is situated in the south west of Sydney, was established in 1969. It is a comprehensive school with approximately 1 350 students including an IO/IM unit. 40% of our students are drawn from outside the area. We have a culturally diverse student population with predominately a first generation Australian composition and an official NESB of around 85%.
The school is supported by PSFP and has various other funding sources for such programs as Linkages, Learning Support, Welfare and Vocational Education. The school achieves highly in visual arts and mathematics.
The school has a structured set up in Stage 4 with tied classes for broad achievement areas in GATS, learning difficulties, numeracy, ESL and some mixed ability classes. Years 7 and 8 have eight to nine classes every academic year. In Stage 5 classes are selected by faculty except in Electives which are student driven. There is always an ESL, LD and GATS class in English. Increasingly, there is a Life Skills withdrawal group.
The English staff has a long serving core. Team teaching with the ESL and Learning Support staff is valued. The English team are experienced SC and HSC markers and have been involved with assessing exams, marking ELLA and SNAP and producing work units with feeder primary schools.
