Extension 1: Module B: Texts and Ways of Thinking
Elective 1: After the Bomb

  • This issue of Time from 1985 called The atomic age contains four 'perspectives on a reality' of what occurred on and after August 6, 1945.

What the boy saw: A fire in the sky
The first view is that of a survivor of the bombing in Hiroshima who became the director of the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum.

What the physicist saw: A mystic world
The second view is that of a physicist who witnessed the first successful nuclear chain-reation experiment and worked on the bomb at the Los Alamos laboratory.

What the President saw: A nation coming into its own
The third view is that of a US President who saw a revolution in world politics and the nature of the presidency.

What the people saw: A vision of ourselves
The fourth is a view of how the bomb affected American thought and culture.
