Australian music 2007

Workshops were held in 2007 to support the study of Australian music with a focus on Indigenous Australian music. Teachers were given three workbooks and CDs to take back to the classroom and spent an inspiring session with Aboriginal musician Matthew Doyle who demonstrated compositional techniques using didjeridoo and vocal percussion. Participants also learnt a welcome song and sit down dance using body percussion.

The Centre for Learning Innovation’s units of work provided in the workshop, including Why Music, Music of Our Place and Music of Our Region, are available for free download from www.tale.edu.au You will need to  enter the DET portal using your DET username and password. If you do not have a password, follow the steps to obtain one in order to access the materials. Once you have entered, you can search under Secondary materials for Creative Arts Stage 4 from where the units can be downloaded.

Finale 2005 is used to complete the following activities.                                                     top

Imaginary Landscapes

This sequence of activities builds on techniques observed in Richard Meale’s ‘Dog Barking at the Moon’ from Three Miro Pieces. Like Meale, students draw on their response to a painting, as a way of structuring a composition.

This tutorial provides a step-by-step guide to using Finale 2005 and Adobe Audition 1.5 to complete the teaching activities. It includes the following sample themes and motifs composed in response to the painting The Hare.

The hare’s theme (126kb)

The movements of the hare are represented in a jerky, bouncy theme with melodic leaps. The sound of the bassoon helps to reflect the quirky nature of Miro’s caricature of a hare.

The hare’s home (63kb)

This theme represents the burrow at the top of the hill: the block chords represent the thick texture of the earth; the melodic contour, with its dip in the middle, represents the hole in the ground.

Swirling theme (63kb)

This theme represents the dotted swirling figure in the painting. The fast semiquaver passage on the piccolo can be repeated several times.

Harp ostinato (126kb)

The melodic contour of this ostinato reflects the gentle, upward slope of the hill.

All themes combined and arranged in a loop program. (751kb)

The finished composition based on The Hare.
