Stages 4 and 5 Drama

Drama Implementation workshops for Years 7-10 were conducted throughout the state in 2004 and 2005. Workshops provided teachers with sample units of work and approaches to teaching 7-10 Drama, opportunities to workshop teaching and learning strategies and a syllabus context for the units in pedagogy, programming, scope and sequence and assessment.

These support materials have been written by experienced drama teachers in metropolitan and regional schools in NSW. During Terms 1 of 2004 and 2005 these units of work were trialled and work samples collected. In Terms 2 some of these teachers were involved in delivering these materials in a series of drama workshops throughout the state.

Stage 4 unit - The Mask. The origin of the mask is embedded in early ritual. A mask's function is diverse. Masks can be used in the classroom in a variety of activities and contexts, including playbuilding, movement or script work. Research into diverse forms of mask is useful to assist students in making and using their own character masks.

Stage 5 unit - Playbuilding from What's is the matter with Mary Jane? 'Page to Stage' is an integral part of the 7-10 drama syllabus. This form of drama reflects syllabus aims and objectives with a strong focus on experiential treatment of the text through playbuilding and poster design.

Stage 5 unit - Creative Movement in Drama. Movement is an essential element in drama and creative movement can be used to creat interesting, challenging work for students. This unit familiarises students with their preferred ways of movementand introduces them to new, different ways of moving. It can be extended to incorporate playbuilding in group presentations.

Stage 5 unit Additional content - An introduction to Small Screen/ Video Drama.This unit fulfils the requirement of a second dramatic context to be taught in the additional content of 7-10 Drama.It introduces students to the specific requirements for creating dramatic meaning on the small screen.

Stage 5 unit Additional content - Commedia dell'arte. Commedia dell'arte is an enjoyable, energetic dramatic form which provides students with challenges to their physical and vocal repetoire. As a consequence students have the opportunity to extend their individual performance skills.
