Starting a computer music laboratory (pdf - 81kb)
This article was written by Briona Gill, music teacher at Chatswood High School. Chatswood High School is a member of the SoundHouse™Alliance, an organisation dedicated to the pedagogical applications of music and multimedia technology. As a member of this alliance, the school has a computer laboratory dedicated to sound and multimedia production. Briona is manager of the SoundHouse™ at Chatswood High school and has a wealth of knowledge and experience in music technology.

Peter Schuhmacher, music teacher at Macintyre HS, outlines some of the ways he uses technology to enhance the teaching of notation and aural skills in his classroom. Use of computer technology helps to motivate students, turning the development of skills in rhythm and melodic notation into a game. At the same time, students learn to navigate the music software. Through this process, the students build up a resource folder of rhythm patterns and other musical ideas that they then use in other musical contexts.

Using freeware to meet the music technology requirements of the new Music Years 7–10 syllabus (pdf - 120kb)
This article outlines recent research by Christopher Barlow, Research Fellow in Music Technology at Leeds College of Music, UK. Barlow is currently conducting a research project that explores the use of freeware to assist schools achieve ICT requirements in post-primary music classes in the UK.

At the recent Stage 6 Music workshops, one of the sessions was devoted to school-based assessment of performance electives. The following article outlines the syllabus requirements and includes a sample task.

Stage 6 music assessment task (pdf - 36 kb)
During 2000, many districts held workshop sessions for teachers of Stage 6 Music to further support the implementation of the new HSC. Participants developed marking guidelines for the sample assessment tasks included in the Music Stage 6 Support Document published by the Board of Studies, and for the portfolio-based assessment task included in CURRICULUM SUPPORT, Vol. 5, No. 2. A sample of a portfolio-based assessment task for composition is included in this article.
