Creative Arts workshops for teachers

Creative Arts professional learning workshops in 2009

Workshops and online courses to support the implementation of CREATIVE ARTS syllabuses for Stages 5 and 6 will be conducted across the state in Terms 1-4 2009.

The workshops will focus on subject-specific content identified for support in recent workshop evaluations. A registration fee of $110 (incl. GST) per participant (or $220 for non-government teachers) will include morning tea and lunch and all workshop materials. Not all courses are available to non-government teachers - please check individual courses below.

Dance
Dance Stage 6 New Prescriptions HSC 2010
A one-day workshop: Implementing new core prescriptions in teaching and learning.
The workshop will have a specific focus on the new work Cry by Alvin Ailey. While this work was introduced with a focus on literacy in the Dance Literacy workshops conducted at the end of 2008, the 2009 workshop will address the following content:
1. The choreographer - Alvin Ailey & his work
2. The work - compositional analysis of Cry
3. The work - critical analysis of Cry (writing and review).

Drama
Workshop 1:Teaching the new texts in the Australian Drama and Theatre (Core Study)
This workshop will provide support for the implementation of new Stage 6 Drama Course Prescriptions (2010-2012). It will focus on the new Australian texts on the Course Prescription list: Norm and Ahmed (Dramatic Traditions in Australia) and Stolen (Contemporary Australian Theatre Practice). These one day intensive workshops will:

  • unpack the Core Study rubric in light of these new texts
  • explore the contexts and particular features of these plays
  • provide a range of strategies for practical and written activities teachers can use in the classroom
  • discuss suitable strategies for assessment of student work
  • consider the way these new texts relate to each topic and other plays set for study
  • highlight useful teaching resources that relate to these plays.

Workshop 2: New topics in Studies in Drama and Theatre: Teaching Topic 8 - Verbatim Theatre
This workshop will provide support for the implementation of new Stage 6 Drama Course Prescriptions (2010-2012). It will focus on the topic: Verbatim Theatre. The workshop will give teachers practical strategies for programming, assessment and teaching this new topic and texts experientially in the classroom.  The workshop will explore the set text: The Laramie Project in depth as well as the other plays.

Workshop 3: New topics in Studies in Drama and Theatre: Teaching Topic 9 -  Black Comedy
This workshop will provide support for the implementation of new Stage 6 Drama Course Prescriptions (2010-2012). It will focus on the topic: Black Comedy. The workshop will give teachers practical strategies for programming, assessment and teaching this new topic and the set texts experientially in the classroom.

Gensavvy Drama Project - Stages 4 & 5
These workshops will provide drama teachers and other gender interested teachers with access to a new resource that has been implemented in DET schools across NSW in 2009. This is a unique new resource developed by the Creative Arts Unit and funded by the Priority Schools and Equity Coordination Unit. The resource uses and applies drama methodologies to engage students in Stages 4 & 5 and their teachers in critical dialogue about gender issues, whilst also addressing the Drama curriculum areas of improvisation and playbuilding. The resource has four modules that investigate gender through drama in relation to girls’ education; boys’ education; gender equity issues and teacher professional learning.

Music
Multimedia in Music (Connected Teaching and Learning)
This one day workshop is designed to support connected teaching and learning in music by exploring the use of IWBs (Interactive White Boards), Video Conferencing, Podcasts, and a range of multimedia.  You will have the chance to share experiences and discover new curriculum resources to support teaching and learning in the music classroom.

The tutorial session will guide you through the development and construction of an interactive, multimedia teaching resource for use in the music classroom.

You will be ensured of an inspiring and stimulating day spent with colleagues addressing your core business and what matters. It’s a chance to reinvigorate your practice in the company of other music teachers with similar needs. Come and equip yourself with new ideas to face the challenges ahead.

Music Technology Online 2009
Following the success of the online music technology course for secondary music teachers in 2007 and 2008, a third course will be offered in Semester 1 2009 continuing the partnership with The University of Newcastle Conservatorium. This course builds on earlier music technology workshops and courses presented from 2004 to 2008. 

Participants should expect to spend five hours a week completing course materials in a distance learning mode using the Blackboard online environment. The week assigning user passwords is from 9 February with the course orientation beginning on February 16 and running for twelve weeks until the end of May. Each module is delivered over four weeks. Participants will develop a portfolio of work during the course with three submission points at Week 4, Week 8 and Week 12.

Opportunities for exploring and experimenting using integrated approaches will provide participants with new ideas to implement ICT in their classrooms and to support the Connected Classrooms program.

The NSW Department of Education and Training is a NSW Institute of Teachers endorsed provider of professional development for the maintenance of accreditation at Professional Competence, scope of endorsement - all Elements of the Professional Teaching Standards.

This Department of Education and Training course is registered professional development under the terms of the NSW Institute of Teachers Continuing Professional Development policy. For teachers accredited at Professional Competence, completion of this course will contribute 60 hours towards Institute Registered professional development. This course will address the following Professional Teaching Standards: 1.2.1, 2.2.3, 3.2.4, 4.2.5, 6.2.1, 6.2.4 and 6.2.7.

On successful completion of the course, participants will receive a non-tertiary certificate from the University of Newcastle Conservatorium recognising their achievements and will be eligible to apply for 10 unit credit towards a Graduate Certificate in Music Technology with the option to progress to an online postgraduate Masters degree in Music Technology.

Visual Arts
MOVE 4wrD>>>>Creating 4D Artworks
Phase 2 of 4D/Moving/Time-based Forms focuses on contemporary video art practice in 7-12 Visual Arts teaching and learning programs and MOVE Video Art in Schools.

Workshops will be conducted in Metropolitan and Regional locations to support the inclusion of 4D forms in visual arts teaching and learning programs.
