Competitions, events and performances listed on this part of our site provide opportunities for students and teachers beyond the classroom. Many of these activities are linked to syllabus outcomes and can be readily incorporated into classroom learning.

Ai Weiwei : Under Construction SHERMAN CONTEMPORARY ART FOUNDATION (SCAF) presents an exhibition by world-renowned Chinese artist Ai Weiwei, curated by Dr Charles Merewether. On exhibition is Through, 2007–08, a major new work specially commissioned by SCAF, and video documentation of Fairytale, Ai Weiwei’s Documenta XII work – a project that enabled 1,001 Chinese from all walks of life to experience Kassel, Germany – as art tourists. Education kit available from Sherman Contemporary Art Foundation. 1 May – 26 July 2008

The Australian Children’s Music Foundation has a vision to use the power of music to inspire and enrich the lives of all Australian children, particularly disadvantaged and Indigenous youth. The 2008 Australian Children’s Music Foundation National Songwriting Competition provides a vehicle in which children of all ages and experiences can channel their energy and abilities into something positive and creative.

All schools are encouraged to promote student participation in the 2008 songwriting competition. Entries close Friday 26th September 2008.

Music.Count Us In is a national initiative to promote music education in schools.

All schools across Australia are encouraged to participate in Australia’s biggest school music event at 11.30am on Thursday 23 October 2008 by joining a nationwide network of singers and players to perform a song.

Teachers’ 2008 resources incorporating sound files, lyric and sheet music for string ensembles, rock bands, concert bands, choirs and other instrumentalists will be available for download from the Music Count Us In website.

SideFX Youth Theatre Festival

Playbuild a performance of 5 to 10 minutes duration for SideFX!

This is a new Intercultural Youth Theatre Festival and competition produced by Sidetrack Performance Group and run by VET Entertainment students. The festival will take place at Sidetrack’s Shed Theatre in early December 2008. This is a unique opportunity for students of all cultural backgrounds to be appreciated for who they are and to be empowered by the experience of drawing upon their own backgrounds to create theatre. Students will be able to complete their dress and technical rehearsals in The Shed Theatre and have firsthand experience performing in a working professional theatre. All youth of school age are eligible to participate.

VET Entertainment teachers and students will need to contact us well before the rehearsal dates to indicate their interest.   Students can complete their 35hr placement at Sidetrack working on this festival!  All tasks undertaken by students will be counted as a part of their VET HSC course.

Rehearsal and preparation dates at The Shed Theatre: 1 – 3 December 2008

The Intercultural Festival and competition performances will be open to the public.

Performance dates: 4 - 6 December 2008 

Registration must be in by the end of Term 3 - 28th September 2008

Registration fee:  $100 per school.

 A ten week unit of work devised by Drama Teacher and Marketing Manager of SPG, Helen Schausberger is available to participating schools.

ArtExpress is an annual exhibition of artworks created by students from government and non-government schools for the Higher School Certificate Examination in Visual Arts.

The works demonstrate exceptional quality across a broad range of subject matter, approaches, styles and media including painting, photography, drawing, graphics, sculpture, wearables, ceramics, design, film and video, computer generated works and collection of works.
