Visual literacy goes online
This School Libraries and Information Literacy Unit course revises the visual literacy terminology proposed by Gunther Kress and Theo van Leeuwen. It presents a range of superb sites dedicated to visual literacy, which offer online activities for students. It provides participants with a visual glossary, posters, and scaffolds to use when analysing visual texts, such as picture books and advertisements. In addition, the course suggests easy to use, appropriate digital tools for creating effective visual texts.
Web 2.0 tools for IWBs online training module

Using these tools, they resource a specific unit of work. They design teaching and learning strategies for higher order thinking, collaboration and problem solving which support Quality Teaching. Although this can be completed individually as an online module, this would also be ideal for a small group of teachers from the same school or for a teacher librarian network working together after school for 6 x approx 1.5 hour sessions, every 3 weeks over 2 terms. Email elizabeth.chase@det.nsw.edu.au to receive course materials and receive mentoring support. This is not a registered course. Other opportunities
Teacher librarians may also be interested in attending various workshops provided by KLA and cross curriculum areas of Curriculum K-12 Directorate. It may be a good opportunity to collaborate or extend understandings of areas you like to support.
School administrative and support staff may be interested in learning opportunities made available to school-based staff who directly support the work of schools. See a list of available programs, including Working in the library (for SAS staff).
