School Libraries and Information Literacy FAQs

Small schools

I've just been given responsibility for the library. Where do I start?

The Department has distributed to small schools (P5 and P6) and to District Offices the publication Off the shelf (third edition). This manual provides starting points, contacts, and training and development activities. Untrained teacher-librarians can upgrade their qualifications through tertiary study.

I work in a very small school. How can I develop a successful whole school information skills program?

It is still possible to incorporate information skills, information literacy and collaborative planning, programming and teaching (CPPT) in a small school. There is an excellent article by Elizabeth Corbett and Rod Megahey in Scan (vol 17 no 2 1998, pp 8-11) on the issues involved.

I am only in the library a few hours/days per week. How do I go about introducing new technologies in a small school?

In a small school, it becomes even more important that staff and students are confident to use the OASIS library system and other technologies without the direct supervision of the teacher-librarian. This independence must be planned for, introduced methodically and evaluated regularly. An article by Katharine Chauncy and Laurie Connery in Scan (vol 17 no 2 1998, pp 19-21) discusses many of the issues involved.
