School management plan: links to the library

My school already has whole-school management and strategic plans in place. Do I need to develop a separate library management plan?

The NSW Department of Education and Training sets educational priorities, on which school planning is based. Schools use these priorities to develop their school management plan. Teacher-librarians work from these priorities and the school management plan to develop the library plan.

A library management plan enables the teacher-librarian to be proactive in school planning. It can demonstrate the link between resources (particularly financial) and school goals and priorities, including the teaching and learning program. A library management plan puts the planner in control by anticipating needs rather than waiting for various requests or crises to arise.

A library management plan reflects both the school management plan and departmental documents and priorities. A carefully worked out management plan strongly supports the work of the teacher-librarian. Planning for the school library takes account of: the vision and mission of the school library; your interpretation of the role of the teacher-librarian; the school's strategic and management plans; key departmental documents; and annual statements.

The vision and mission of the school library and the role of the teacher-librarian in your school community are reflected in and guided by your school library policy.
