School Libraries and Information Literacy FAQs
Selection of resources
Where can I find a list of the criteria for selection of resources?
The Handbook for school libraries (second edition) contains a list of selection criteria which could be used in assessing resources (see Appendices 3-5, pp 101-105). These suggestions need to be balanced with the needs of the school and the current collection.
The Aboriginal Education K-12 resource guide also has a section on selecting and evaluating resources (pp. 15-17).
What selection aids are available?
There are a range of professional review journals available including: Scan, Reading Time and Magpies. Scan, the Departmental journal, reviews all media, including Internet sites, and focuses on relevance to the NSW curriculum. Reviews from Scan and others commissioned as part of the review program have been uploaded to the Resource reviews database on the School Libraries and Information Literacy web site.
