School Libraries and Information Literacy FAQs
Culling
Why do I need to cull?
Culling, sometimes referred to as weeding, involves the removal and disposal of resources that are considered unsuitable for continued inclusion in the collection. It is as important as the initial selection of resources. The purpose of culling is to make the collection relevant and inviting. For further information on culling, including suggested criteria, refer to Handbook for school libraries (second edition), pp 27-28.
How often should I cull?
Culling is a regular and ongoing process. Appropriate times could be: during stocktake; when designing units of work with other staff; when items are returned.
Do I have to hand write a list for the auditor of all books culled?
You do need to keep a record of disposed items. Between stocktakes, the only record need be a screen dump (Print screen) of the details of the item. The record itself is removed from OASIS automatically when the item is written off at stocktake. The OASIS library Stocktake report provides the relevant details required for audit.
