K-6 INITIATIVES IN QUALITY TEACHING

The Curriculum planning frameworks K-6 currently being implemented in primary schools across NSW were developed by Curriculum K-12 Directorate informed by the Quality Teaching model with the connections between KLAs to ensure that they were authentic and encouraged deep knowledge and deep understanding of key concepts.

The connection focus statements were then written as big ideas and assisted to define the rich tasks as part of the units.

Sample units of work were coded as part of the review process to ensure that aspects of Quality Teaching (such as, deep knowledge and knowledge integration) were evident.

Some of the teachers who were trialling the units of work were asked to identify how the teaching of the units enhanced Quality Teaching principles.

Teachers are using the Quality Teaching model as a way of delivering the curriculum to improve student achievement. Quality Teaching has helped focus teachers' attention on HOW they teach as much as on WHAT they teach. This is the danger when new texts and syllabuses are implemented - it works to remind teachers of and affirm their practice.
