Live Life Well @ School
Curriculum K-12 Directorate, in partnership with NSW Health, invites primary schools to register to be a part of the Live Life Well @ School program. This is a major initiative of the NSW Department of Education and Training and NSW Health for NSW government primary schools. This program involves clusters of schools participating in a series of professional learning workshops. The focus of these workshops will be on nutrition education and physical activity as part of PDHPE K-6 programs.
Why the Live Life Well @ School program?
The Live Life Well @ School program involves clusters of primary schools participating together in a series of professional learning workshops. The focus of these workshops is on nutrition education, fundamental movement skills and physical activity as part of PDHPE K-6 programs. The professional learning program aims to get more students, more active more often as well as providing a renewed focus on healthy eating habits.
How did the Live Life Well @ School program come about?
Australian children are not as healthy as they should be. Many of them are putting on excess weight and not losing it as they get older. In exact terms, from 1985 to 1995 the level more than doubled for overweight (mildly above healthy weight) and obesity (considerably above health weight) combined. In the same period the level of obesity on its own tripled in all age groups and for both sexes. Over the last 20 years, rates of overweight and obesity in children have risen greatly in many countries around the world. Obese children have a 25–50% chance of being obese as adults, and this chance may increase to around 75% for obese adolescents. The most recent data indicates that almost 25% of children in NSW are overweight or obese (NSW Schools Physical Activity and Nutrition Survey 2004).
Research also indicates that children engage in less active pursuits and consume more energy dense food and drinks than ever before. To bring this child health and wellbeing issue to light in our schools, it is important that we focus on the context in which we can make a difference. The Live Life Well @ School program provides us with a renewed focus on our school PDHPE programs and allows opportunities for schools to reflect on current programs and practices. Quality PDHPE programs provide our students with opportunities to learn fundamental movement skills, value the importance of being physically active and develop decision making skills needed to make healthy food choices.
