What are the key areas of gymnastics in the PDHPE K-6 Syllabus?
The areas addressed in the gymnastics strand of the PDHPE K-6 Syllabus are:
Non-locomotor skills This includes the skills of bending, twisting, stretching, turning, curling, rocking, static balancing, laterality (moving left to and right body parts) and handstands.
Locomotor skills This includes step patterns such as running, walking, hopping, skipping, galloping, jumping, landing, travelling on different body parts, rolling, climbing, swinging and hanging.
Elements of movement This includes: spatial awareness, e.g. position, direction, boundaries, levels and formation; dynamics, e.g. soft, hard, acceleration, deceleration; and relationships, e.g. with others and apparatus.
Composition This includes simple combinations of locomotor and non-locomotor activities such as formations during warm-up activities, games and sequence presentations.
