Using ICT in PDHPE
In this Stage 3 activity, students will enter data into a prepared template, generate and analyse a report in regard to their levels of physical activity.
Task:
Students analyse their physical activity levels at home and at school. They then make suggestions about how they could increase their physical activity levels. Students undertake the following steps to complete the task.
- Ask students to record in a journal or logbook all types of physical activity they have participated in over the period of one week. Students should also record the estimated amount of time (in minutes) for each type of physical activity.
- Students use a prepared template to enter the data from their journal. A suggested template is illustrated below. Teachers need to make a decision whether students will insert the formula into the spreadsheet themselves or whether the formula will be included as part of the spreadsheet template. The spreadsheet could be given as a hard copy to students in order for them to prepare the data before entering it into an electronic copy. This will be particularly useful if access to computers is limited.

- Distribute and discuss Australia's Physical Activity Recommendations for 5-12 year olds to students. Ask the students to identify aspects of the guidelines that they need to gather information on, in order to compare their results to the guidelines. For example, amount of moderate to vigorous activity per day, number of hours using electronic media etc.
- Ask students to compare the data gathered on the personal physical activity levels to the Australia's Physical Activity Recommendations for 5-12 year olds . This could be illustrated through the use of graphs generated from the completed spreadsheet.
- Ask students to analyse their findings and formulate suggestions of how they could include more physical activity in their daily life.
