How to add accents to your French texts
Accent aigu: É, é | Hold down Control key and strike the apostrophe (next to the Enter key). Release Control key and strike the letter key. For a capital letter, hold down the Control key, strike apostrophe key, release, hold down Shift key and strike letter key. |
Accent grave: À, à - è | Hold down Control key and strike ~` key (the first key on the left of the main keyboard). Then follow the same procedure as before for the capital letter. |
Accent circonflexe: ê, â, ô, î, û | Hold down the Control and Shift keys together and strike number 6 on the main keyboard. Release and strike the letter of your choice. |
Tréma: ï, ë, ü | Hold down the Control and Shift keys together, strike colon/semi-colon (: ; ) key (second on the left of the Enter key). Release and strike the letter of your choice. |
Cédille: ç | Hold down the Control key and strike the comma key (<,). Release and strike the letter (c). |

Alternatively you may go to insert on the main tool bar, go down to Symbol, choose the one you wish to use, click on it until it changes colour, click on the Insert box at the bottom of the page and presto! As a bonus the letter is kept on a bar which says “Recently used symbols” for future use!
