Welcome to the Community Languages homepage

Community Languages are spoken by Australians in their everyday lives; they are used for communication within the family, for buying things at the shops, for recreation, for finding out what's happening in the world.

The term "community language" can refer to any of the various languages within the Australian community.

Currently 151 government schools are involved in the NSW K-6 Community Languages Program. There are 31 languages taught through this program. They are:Arabic, Auslan, Assyrian, Bengali, Chinese, Dari, Farsi, French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Hindi, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Khmer, Korean, Lao, Macedonian, Maori, Portuguese, Punjabi, Russian, Samoan, Serbian, Spanish, Tamil Tongan, Turkish, Urdu, Vietnamese.
