NSW is probably unique in having introduced a range of severely endangered languages into the school curriculum as part of a state policy aimed at preserving and rekindling the Aboriginal languages of the region. Now it is possible for some Aboriginal students to study their own language as the mandatory LOTE secondary school, a language that may not have been spoken widely for generations. Many students, both indigenous and non-indigenous are discovering the relevance of learning the language that was originally spoken in their region, such as Yuwaalaraay in Walgett or Wiradjuri in Forbes.
On this site you will find information about Aboriginal languages in schools. You can access the AGQTP Literacy in Aboriginal languages website which will give you information if you are thinking about starting a program.
Bulletins, which are sent out to schools which have Aboriginal language programs in hard copy can now be read online.
Workshops and events will be advertised here, and there are links to other useful sites.
