China Downunder

The teaching and learning lessons in China Downunder for Stage 3 includes: Mapping, Links China has with Australia, some significant Australians of Chinese heritage, the history of Chinese immigration to Australia, some Chinese practices and influcences on Australia, comparing Australian and Chinese New Year.

MakingCents: Calculating the cost

The teaching and learning lessons lessons in MakingCents for Stage 3 includes: roles and responsibilities of owning and usign a mobile phone, evaluating the cost of using a mobile phone, developing a simple budget to meet financial responsibilities, understanding some financial products and services.

Celebrating together

The teaching and learning lessons in Celebrating together for Stage 3 includes: identifying the meaning a multicultural country, classify a range of celebrations, examine some celebrations that mark a stage of life - inclusive of examples of different Aboriginal practices and other countries, examines some cultural practices that use water that are part of a world religion, identifies some examples of stereotypes (e.g. racism) and the impact it has on people, research a celebration in another country in the Asia Pacific region and compare to Australia, research a religious or cultural event, identify words that are commonly used in Australia and some of their multicutlural origins (including Aboriginal languages), Create a class collage that describes multicutlural Australia.

The HSIE teaching and learning in Living Land  is environmental case study of a world environment found in Australia. The case study used is of an alpine environment - Mt Kosciusko, the only example of this environment in Australian. Lessons include: Introducing Mt Kosciusko, natural features of the environment, mapping, climate, Aboriginal people of the area, European settlement and effects on the environment, a media article evaluating the impact of land use, the effect of tourism.

The HSIE teaching and learning in Identity develops students understanding of Australian identities and the effect of Australian heritage on a national identity. Lessons include: the difficulties caused by the stereotype of a typical Australian, significant Australians, identifying Australian identities, symbols of Australia, nationally remembered events, examples of Australian democracy.

The HSIE teaching and learning in Interconnecting growth and change is about  the importance of the Murray Darling river system to NSW, Australia, its significance as a major world river system, the Aboriginal peoples connection and Dreaming to the Murray Darling, European discovery, early settlement and the towns along the rivers, the role of the Murray river in Federation, the environmental issues affecting the rivers and some civic participation in relation to waterways.

The teaching and learning in Making Informed Choices develops students understanding of government in Australia. The lessons include a decision making dilemma, the different responsibilities of State and Federal levels of government, how people are represented by government, how the voting system works, an investigation of some social justice issues and how laws are made.

The HSIE teaching and learning in Global and social issues initially looks at global and social issues in the news; the focus then moves to the social issue of financial literacy where money as income is used to meet family commitments, the responsibilities associated with a mobile phone, some other financial sources and resources, and a fundraising event are undertaken. This is then looked at in the context of Australia’s global responsibilities.

The HSIE teaching and learning in Traditions and heritage addresses key events in Australia’s history, Aboriginal cultural practices and customary lore, some Australian human rights issues including the stolen generations and Reconciliation, significant historical events and people and key people in the development of Australian democracy.

The HSIE teaching and learning in Symbol systems is about the influence and contributions of Chinese peole and culture on Australia, (another national group could used as an alternative case study) this includes significant Chinese Australians, the contribution of Chinese food, beliefs and practices, recreation activities, religions, Chinese New Year, and the contributions made by Chinese organisations to Australian society.
