Stage 1 teaching programs

Stage 1 teaching and learning can include:

Published teaching and learning resources

China Downunder 

Teaching and learning activities that identify the location of China, goods and services that originate in China and their impact on Australia, different Chinese families, including families in Australia, Chinese food, plants, games and sports and celebrating Chinese New Year in Australia.

Caring for place, caring for country

Teaching and learning resource about contemporary Aboriginal culture, heritage and connection with the land. Teaching acitivies include: What is place? My place - my country; Family, place and country, Belonging to place and country, The Dreaming: origin of place and country, Connection to place and country, Valuing place and country and Sharing place and country.  

  • Assessment strand - Cultures.
    Focus outcomes CUS1.3 and CUS1.4
    Supporting outcomes CCS1.1, CCS1.2, ENS1.5, ENS1.6 and SSS1.8.

Celebrating together

A multistage unit of work that includes specific teaching and learning activities for Stage 1. The teaching and learning provides opportunities for students to explore cultural diversity of communities within Australia and other parts of the world through the study of celebrations. Activties include: Celebrations and their purpose, Celebrating important days, How celebrations are alike and different, How people celebrate, Festival study, Diversity around us and Celebrating diversity.

MakingCents: Using money

The teaching and learning included in Using money is about using money wisely to meet needs and wants. Activities include identifying notes and coins, saving strategies and spending to wisely to meet needs Money is identified as a resource that is needed by people and families to meet their needs and wants and a some financial services are explored in simple terms. The activities integrate HSIE and Mathematics and include: A pocket money problem, Financial sources and resources, Money as a tool and the SUPERstore.

    Focus outcome SSS1.7.

Treasures

The teaching and learning include in Treasures is about personal and family heritage and culture. Activites  use easily sourced primary historical source material and artefacts and include: Individual characteristics and traits, shared rituals, origins, rituals and celebrations within families, artefacts, favourite items, memorabilia, the foundations of personal heritage. 

  • Assessment strand - Change and continuity. 
    Focus outcomes CCS1.1 and CCS1.2.
    Supporting outcomes CUS1.3 and CUS1.4.

Where the sun rises.......

Where the sun rises provides a range of teaching and learning acitivities that engage students with learning about cultural diversity using Japan as a case study. A variety of aspects of Japanese culture are explored, these include;Greetings, gestures and images, mapping, national symbols of Japan, traditional costumes, festivals, food, Mount Fuji, transport, school in Japan, similiar and different - Japan compared to Australia.

  • Assessment strand - Cultures.
    Focus outcome CUS1.4.
    Supporting outcomes CCS1.1, CUS1.3, ENS1.5, ENS1.6,SSS1.7 and SSS1.8.

The HSIE teaching and learning in Local Places is about developing concepts of location and environment, mapping our environment, environmental diversity, living with the land, Aboriginal features of the local area, caring for the environment, connection to place and country, effects of changing the environment, respecting the environment.

The HSIE teaching and learning in Growing and changing has a focus on families, family needs and wants , rights and responsibilties, making decisions, classroom rules, community roles and responsibilities and community involvment.

The HSIE teaching and learning in HSIE focuses on financial literacy with a pocket money problem, the home to bank game, financial sources and resources, money as a tool, advertising strategies, the class store, with some reading activities on growing rice.
