A range of resources have been developed by Curriculum K-12 Directorate to support the teaching of the HSIE K-6 syllabus outcomes and subject matter. These resources are not available through DET sales.

Ambush in Bandhavgarh: Tigers and the management of their habitat

Ambush in Bandhavgarh is a 48 page book that details both the life of tigers as part of a fragile ecosystem, as well as a case study outlining the management of the Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve, an area in India where these beautiful animals are fighting extinction. The book complements content in the Stage 3 HSIE Environment strand.
Ambush in Bandhavgarh is a result of a close association teachers in the NSW Studies of Asia program have had with the Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve over a number of years. It includes beautiful photographs of the reserve from Vivek Sharma, a naturalist working in the area.
The book will be available to all schools for a cost of $77 (GST inclusive) for a pack of 30 books. Please complete the attached tax invoice. Fax Back Invoice.
China Downunder

China Downunder is a multistage HSIE teaching resource. The teacher’s book provides significant support for teaching and learning in Stages 1, 2 and 3. Detailed teaching notes, handouts and background information specific to each stage are included. A class set of 30 booklets providing interesting and engaging images of contemporary China are also part of the resource.

Some additional class sets of the student image booklet only are now available. Schools (from all sectors) can request a set of images booklets for their school library by emailing hsie@det.nsw.edu.au with the name of contact teacher, school name and postal details. Additional copies of the teachers book are no longer available and will need to be downloaded from the link above.
The following print resouces have been distributed to schools and should be available in the school library. Additional copies of the teachers book, and in some instances the whole resource can be downloaded.
Belief in Action
The resource provides a series of windows into Australian society, both past and present, by way of studies of people, events and ideas. The rationale is that many people, events and ideas are known but their religious background and motivation are not. The studies recognize the religious convictions of people that led to decisions, actions and activities that have affected other Australians. These studies focus on, and are referred to, the outcome and subject matter of Stage 3 in the HSIE K-6 syllabus.

- Outcomes addressed in this resource include: CCS3.1, CCS3.2, CUS3.3, ENS3.6, SSS3.7 and SSS3.8.

Fact sheets on world religions
Fact sheets for teacher reference have been developed for each of the 5 major world religions as part of the general religious compononent included in HSIE. The facts sheets are designed to provide teachers with concise and accurate information about each religion. Each fact sheet identifies specific references in the resource Belief in Action. Teachers are able to explore each religion with students using the examples included in Belief in Action.

By word of mouth
By word of mouth offers information on the use of oral history as a classroom device, providing suggestions on preparing students as interviewers: how to be good listeners and ask thoughtful questions, gaining a perspective of the past through recollection of others. A video was included with the teachers book when this resource was distributed to schools.

MakingCents: Calculating the costMakingCents is an award winning resource which provides support for teachers in the area of financial literacy. The materials have been developed by DET for Finance First. The materials can be downloaded from the MakinCents web site. The resource addresses the Social systems and structures strand of the HSIE syllabus and include references to Mathematics.

Celebrating Together
Celebrating together is a multistage unit of work that provides opportunities for students to explore the cultural diversity of communities within Australia and the world through the study of celebrations. It incorporates family, community, national, international, cultural and religious celebrations and how these reflect the values and beliefs of a particular group. It aims to develop intercultural understandings and examines the issues of prejudice and racism. Students are given opportunities to clarify, apply and evaluate their own attitudes and values as citizens of a multicultural society. Supports the Culture strand with relevance for Stages 1, 2 and 3.

Sydney Airport Australia's International Gateway
Sydney Airport was distributed to schools in 2000, a class set of student booklets were included. This resource is no longer available and due to copyright can not be internet published.
The resource meets aspects of all of the HSIE K-6 content strands for Stage 3, with an emphasis on Resource systems. The resource is divided into 4 sections - History, Functions, Infrastructure and Services of Sydney Airport. The lessons have an emphasis on skills with the student booklet providing background knowledge to support skill development.

Sites and Scenes
Sites and Scenes is a CD-ROM of significant and interesting heritage sites around NSW. Students are assigned a task to research using the information on the CD-ROM to produce a report based on their research.
The heritage sites on the CD-ROM area: Dundullimal historic house, Parramatta Park, Luna Park, Eveleigh railway workshops, Macquarie lighthouse and the wreck of the Dunbar, Mutawintji National Park, South Steyne ferry, the Tank Stream, Saumarez homestead, Wing Hing Long Store, Rookwood Necropolis, The Great Synagogue, Cadia, Sydney Opera House.

A Shared History
A Shared History, an Internet site is designed to support the teaching of Aboriginal perspectives in the NSW Human Society and Its Environment K-6 syllabus.
The site contains:
A rationale for teaching Aboriginal perspectives.
A set of protocols and guidelines to assist in the implementation of the NSW Department of Education and Training's mandatory policies.
A series of teaching ideas for Stages 1 to 3.

Access Asia

The Access Asia Program consists of schools that seek to develop a significant Asia focus in the curriculum from Kindergarten to Year 12.
These schools work towards the inclusion of planned and identifiable components of studies of Asia in school teaching and learning programs.
The Access Asia program provides:
- a framework and a process through which Asia-focused curriculum change will occur in schools
- support and professional development for teachers
- curriculum materials in print and electronic form
Discovering Democracy

NSW Discovering Democracy professional development website promotes civics and citizenship education in government and non-government schools across Years 4–10.
The aim of the NSW professional development on Discovering Democracy is to provide support for teachers in developing strategies that will prepare students to play their part as active and informed citizens.
NSW Constitution
Civics continues to be a prominent issue in contemporary society. This site aims to provide information about the NSW Constitution for students and the community. The Civics component of the NSW HSIE Syllabuses K-12 requires students to study structure of government. This is an essential part of being an informed citizen, understanding how the "rules" work. In the future, students of today may be called upon to take part in Constitution-making (a referendum). One way to begin this study is to look at the features of the NSW Constitution.
Through my window

Through my window is a simple and engaging e-mail activity designed to allow students to communicate about their world through words and images. It is also a great way to contact other schools.
Celebrations and commemorations

An Internet civics project looking at celebrations and commemorations around the world.
One environment
Relevant stage(s): Stage 3

One Environment is designed for school students aged 9–14 (Years 5–8 in most education systems). Its aims for students are to:
1. learn about the environment in the framework of civics and citizenship
2. learn to use technology in the classroom
3. develop Internet literacy.
The Convention on the Rights of the Child
Relevant stage(s): Stage 3
The Convention on the Rights of the Child is an international document that outlines basic rights for all children 0-18 year olds. It is a treaty designed to allow all children the right to fulfill their potential simply because they are human.
In this Internet project we will be looking at some of the worst sides of human behaviour, the mistreatment and abuse of millions of children and also at some of the best of human behaviour, the work of thousands of people who are fighting to end this mistreatment and abuse.
