A range of resources have been developed by Curriculum K-12 Directorate to support the teaching of the HSIE K-6 syllabus outcomes and subject matter. These resources are not available through DET sales.
Teaching resources
China Downunder

China Downunder is a multistage HSIE teaching resource. The teacher’s book provides significant support for teaching and learning in Stages 1, 2 and 3. Detailed teaching notes, handouts and background information specific to each stage are included. A class set of 30 booklets providing interesting and engaging images of contemporary China are also part of the resource.

Some additional class sets of the student image booklet only are now available. Schools (from all sectors) can request a set of images booklets for their school library by emailing hsie@det.nsw.edu.au with the name of contact teacher, school name and postal details. Additional copies of the teachers book are no longer available and will need to be downloaded from the link above.
The following print resources have been distributed to schools and should be available in the school library. Additional copies of teachers books, and in some instances the whole resource can be downloaded.
It didn't always look like this
This teaching resource uses the Penrith lakes as a case study that provides a model that can be adapted to other local areas. The changes that have occurred at the Penrith lakes are investigated and are inclusive of the Aboriginal heritage and culture of the area. The resouce kit sent to schools included the teachers book, a story Tessa's Treasure, and a set of pictorial broadsheets.

MakingCents: Budgeting and spending
MakingCents is an award winning resource which provides support for teachers in the area of financial literacy. The materials have been developed by DET for Finance First. The materials can be downloaded from the MakingCents web site. The resource addresses the Social systems and structures strand of the HSIE syllabus and include references to Mathematics.

Talking Identity
The Talking Identity is a teaching and learning resource that addresses some of the Aboriginal identity components of HSIE in Stage 2. These include: The land, the lore and the Dreaming, Community and community symbols, Family heritage, Belonging to country, Roles, rules and responsibilities, Identity, racism, prejudice and diveristy. Included in the resource sent to school in 2002 are the teachers book Talking Identity, a novel The fat and juicy place by Dianne Kidd, Rak Niwilli from the BOS Aboriginal Literacy Resource Kit 1995 and a tape of the song Rak Niwilli.

Celebrating Together
Celebrating together is a multistage unit of work that provides opportunities for students to explore the cultural diversity of communities within Australia and the world through the study of celebrations. It incorporates family, community, national, international, cultural and religious celebrations and how these reflect the values and beliefs of a particular group. It aims to develop intercultural understandings and examines the issues of prejudice and racism. Students are given opportunities to clarify, apply and evaluate their own attitudes and values as citizens of a multicultural society.

Fact sheets on world religions
Fact sheets for teacher reference have been developed for each of the 5 major world religions as part of the general religious compononent included in HSIE that is a feature of the Culture Strand for Stage 2. The facts sheets are designed to provide teachers with concise and accurate information about each religion. Each fact sheet also identifies specific references in the Stage 3 resource Belief in Action that can provide additional support for teachers to explore each religion with some reference to the examples included in Belief in Action.

The Journey of Oilseeds, a teaching resource
The Journey of Oilseeds has been updated. This free educational resource kit is distributed by the Australian Oilseeds Federation. The teaching and learning activities demonstrate the farm to paddock experience of Australian spreads. The resource supports outcomes in Human Society and its Environment and Science and Technology. The kit was developed in conjunction with the New South Wales Department of Education and Training.

What is a national park?
The Department of Environment and Conservation (NSW) have developed an award winning teaching resource in partnership with the NSW Department of Education and Training. The resource folder can be purchased from the National Parks and Wildlife Service. The teaching material addresses the function and importance of national parks, the similiarities and differences of national parks, the history and heritage of sites, including Aboriginal sites, who works in a national park and their roles, how to care for national parks and the environment.
The teaching resource contains a Teachers Guide, with lesson notes, student factsheets, worksheets and background information for teachers, a video Web of life for kids, a set of National Parks and Wildlife posters, some Guides to National parks in NSW stored in a folder.

A Shared History
A Shared History, an Internet site is designed to support the teaching of Aboriginal perspectives in the NSW Human Society and Its Environment K-6 syllabus.
The site contains:
A rationale for teaching Aboriginal perspectives.
A set of protocols and guidelines to assist in the implementation of the NSW Department of Education and Training's mandatory policies.
A series of teaching ideas for Stages 1 to 3.
A list of resources
A list of educationally relevant contacts

Access Asia

The Access Asia Program consists of schools that seek to develop a significant Asia focus in the curriculum from Kindergarten to Year 12.
These schools work towards the inclusion of planned and identifiable components of studies of Asia in school teaching and learning programs.
The Access Asia program provides:
- a framework and a process through which Asia-focused curriculum change will occur in schools
- support and professional development for teachers
- curriculum materials in print and electronic form
Discovering Democracy

NSW Discovering Democracy professional development website promotes civics and citizenship education in government and non-government schools across Years 4–10.
The aim of the NSW professional development on Discovering Democracy is to provide support for teachers in developing strategies that will prepare students to play their part as active and informed citizens.
