Numeracy
Content within the study of Human Society and its Environment requires students to analyse data, construct and interpret graphs and maps, use latitude and longitude, construction and interpretation of time lines. HSIE students develop skills in numeracy in a range of practicial contexts.
The financial literacy program MakingCents is an example of an integrated HSIE / Mathematics program.

MakingCents: Using Money
MakingCents is an award winning resource which provides support for teachers in the area of financial literacy. The materials have been developed by the New South Wales Department of Education and Training. The materials can be downloaded from the MakingCents web site. The resource addresses the Social systems and structures strand of the HSIE syllabus and include teaching and learning in Mathematics referenced to Mathematics outcomes.

HSIE provides a meaningful context for learning and practising specific numeracy skills.
The support documents BST Numeracy Teaching Strategies and Linking Basic Skills Tests to the Curriculum is produced annually with teaching strategies to support the development of numeracy skills in a range of Key Learning areas. The support document aligns with the Basic Skills Test for years 3 and 5 with specific reference to HSIE outcomes and syllabus subject matter.
