Curriculum support for NSW Public Schools

Literacy

Literacy skills in reading, writing, talking, listening viewing are essential to the acquiristion of the knowledge, skills, understandings and values and attitudes in Human Society and Its Environment. They provide explicit links to the development of literacy skills. Acquiring and processing information requires reading, listening to and viewing a range of information sources. Communication requires students to present information using a variety of oral, written and non-verbal text types.

HSIE provides a meaningful context for learning and practising specific literacy skills.

The support documents BST Literacy Teaching Strategies and Linking Basic Skills Tests to the Curriculum are produced annually with teaching strategies to support the development of literacy skills in a range of key learning areas. The support document aligns with the Basic Skills Test for Years 3 and 5 with specific reference to HSIE outcomes and syllabus subject matter.
