This page provides a selection of units of work for Stage 1 Visual Arts.
Creature feature -Unit Overview
![]() | Students look at the physical attributes (colour, surface texture, line and shape) of insects and spiders. They draw insects and spiders experimenting with various drawing media to show qualities of line and surface texture. They make sculptures of insects and spiders using natural materials gathered from the local environment or materials that can be found around the home. Shadows cast from the sculptures are sketched and developed into drawings or paintings. Students refer to artworks to discover how artists express their ideas and feelings through surfaces and textures of animals in sculptures. |

The animal in me - Unit overview
![]() | Students represent themselves through drawing and monoprinting. They investigate how shape, texture and line can be used to express ideas about themselves. The students make artworks that include the qualities of animals in representations of themselves. They consider how artists construct portrait paintings and prints. |

Beat around the bush - Unit overview
![]() | Students investigate a local natural environment and record their responses in drawings and photographs. The students discuss how three artists respond to the environment. They explore ways of incorporating direct experiences and artists' interpretations into a new work. |

Ordinary, extraordinary - Unit overview
![]() | Students discover how artists represent the places where they live and work, as well as the objects around them. Students make drawings, collages, prints and paintings representing household objects. They record details of line and shape in drawing, then explore combinations of shapes and textures in still life collages. |

This sporting life - Unit overview
![]() | Students explore a range of poses and movements in different sports. They make linear drawings focusing on movement and direction. Students look at sports and athletes in ancient civilisations and in contemporary Australia and consider how artists record events. Students make collages that express ideas about athletes and movement. |
