Stage 1 Dance resources

This page provides a sample scope and sequence and two units of work for Stage 1 dance. The units of work may need to be modified to reflect the needs or experiences of the students.

Scope and sequence

The Creative Arts K–6 Syllabus outlines the scope for dance in performing, composing and appreciating. The scope is specifically described in terms of the relationships between the elements of dance and dance contexts.

Units of work that the school has devised, as well as units of work that appear in support documents such as Quantum leaps and the Creative Arts K–6 Units of Work are appropriate starting points for inclusions in a scope and sequence. Some units of work may need to be modified to reflect the needs or experiences of the students. It is important that units of work build upon knowledge, understanding and skills gained in other units of work across each of the stages.

Stage 1 sample scope and sequence (pdf - 48kb)
This table shows a progression of skills and knowledge for performing, composing and appreciating and the elements of dance in units of work for Stage 1.

Units of work

 Dance sketch: off-centre lean

Stage 1 Dance unit: Splish splash (pdf - 92kb)
This unit has been created using the stimulus water. Some of the themes that are explored include the properties of water, sea creatures or the beach. Any of these themes could be expanded using the process followed in this unit to develop a new unit in its own right.

Stage 1 Dance unit: All the fun of the fair (pdf - 93kb)Creating movement and dance sequences using a variety of stimuli related to a theme forms the basis of this unit. Students experience working as an individual and in groups to create movements related to ideas related to going to the fair. Another adaptation could be to focus on how all the sideshow rides move and build a dance related to these different movement actions.
