Bus travel for Departmental activities
If a bus or coach is fitted with seatbelts, the law requires all passengers to use the available restraint.
All new buses manufactured since August 1997 are required to be fitted with the following safety features: specially designed seats with extra padding, improved padding on interior walls and stanchions, improved mirror systems and door safety systems.
The inclusion of seatbelts is not part of the requirements. However, some buses and coaches may be fitted with seatbelts.
Generally coaches will have no capacity for students to stand. When hiring buses or coaches, schools should liaise with the bus company to determine the seating and standing capacity of each bus.
Schools with enquiries about issues relating to bus transport should contact the NSW Ministry of Transport.
