Road safety education resources for primary schools
Effective K-6 road safety education programs:
- are developmentally appropriate, ongoing and sequential from Kindergarten to Year 6
- are taught as part of the PDHPE K-6 syllabus
- include specific road safety content in each stage within the Safe Living strand of the syllabus
- support the key road safety messages
- address local issues and are relevant to the students
- provide learning experiences which explore pedestrian safety, car and bus passenger safety and safety on wheels.
NSW public schools can contact their Road Safety Education Officer for any curriculum support and implementation ideas for road safety education, or advice about these free resources.

These resources are designed to assist teachers in planning and implementing road safety education programs.
Safety Town website
Safety Town is a new road safety educational resource developed by Transport for NSW. It is an interactive website for families as well as providing a secure login site for teachers and students in stage 3. It provides a range of online road safety activities and a teachers’ handbook.

Move Ahead with Street Sense resource
The Move Ahead with Street Sense resource kits are for students in Stage 1 (incorporating Early Stage 1) and Stage 2. The resources contain a wide range of teaching and learning activities, big books, picture packs, games and songs.
All Move Ahead with Street Sense stories and songs are available on CD.

Kindergarten Orientation resource
As children enter Kindergarten their exposure to the traffic environment increases. Kindergarten Orientation Day is a great time for your school to promote safe road behaviour and provide road safety information to parents and carers.
This free resource provides a suggested presentation that can be delivered by teachers at your school.

Kindergarten orientation packs
Transport for NSW has produced a resource pack for families and carers about safe passenger and pedestrian behaviours for their children and how to maintain a safe traffic environment around their local schools.
This pack is available for free to all families and carers who are enrolling kindergarten students.

Bus Safety resource
The Bus Safety resource consists of teaching and learning activities for students in Stage 3 and Stage 4 and supports the Personal Development, Health and Physical Education K-6 and 7-10 syllabuses.
The resource aims to increase bus safety awareness for students and supports the main bus safety messages promoted by Transport for NSW and the Department of Education and Communities.
iRide, iRead, iThink book rap
iRide, iRead, iThink is a road safety education book rap that is available to support the National Year of Reading.
The book rap includes activities suitable for students in Stages 2 and 3. Students can share their learning about riding and being safe through uploading comments to a blog and sharing creations in a gallery.
