Curriculum support for NSW Public Schools

Road safety education

The Department of Education and Training can contribute to the reduction of injuries and fatalities by providing coherent, sequential and effective road safety education as part of PDHPE K–10.

Inappropriate and high risk behaviours contribute to the majority of road crashes across all age groups. Road safety education seeks to develop positive attitudes and safe behaviours in children and adolescents as present and future road users (passengers, pedestrians, cyclists and drivers).

Schools will provide teaching and learning programs which lead to the achievement of student outcomes as specified in the Board of Studies NSW PDHPE syllabuses.

The planning and delivery of road safety education programs in schools will:

  • address the developmental needs of students
  • reflect government, school and community input
  • be implemented as a whole-school, curriculum-based program
  • address government road safety legislation and law enforcement.

Road safety education is taught in NSW government schools within the key learning area of Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE). PDHPE is mandatory for all students from Kindergarten to Year 10. The focus of road safety education programs is on the development of knowledge, values, attitudes and behaviours to enable all students to be safe road users.
