Safety Around Schools - implementation guidelines

There are a significant number of issues that can impact on the safety of children in the vicinity of schools. School education programs can contribute to improving safety, however some road safety problems involving enforcement, engineering or environmental issues may need to be referred to the relevant organisation, e.g. your local council, the police, your local bus operator, the NSW Ministry of Transport or the RTA.

The RTA has produced A practical guide to addressing road safety issues around schools to give schools guidance in seeking assistance from appropriate agencies. This document has been sent to all schools by the RTA and it is also available on the RTA website.

Where schools are having difficulty resolving road safety issues outside schools they should refer their concerns to the RTA's Safety Around Schools Officer in their region. Contact details are available in A practical guide to addressing road safety issues outside schools.

For  information about obtaining this document schools should contact the Department's Road Safety Education Program.

Vehicles on school grounds

Parents

The RTA has developed a package of information sheets and newsletter inserts for schools to use to support school road safety education. To find out how to obtain a copy of this package contact your regional Road Safety Education Consultant.
