Curriculum support for NSW Public Schools

RESEARCH

The Expertise of Adolescent Literacy Teachers by Sheri Parris, Cathy Collins Block. The purpose of this study was to identify practices that create the greatest literacy gains for secondary students and to distinguish the qualities of highly effective secondary teaching behaviours.

EdNA (Education Network Australia) Online is a service that aims to support and promote the benefits of the Internet for learning, education and training in Australia. It is organised around Australian curriculum, its tools are free to Australian educators, and it is funded by the bodies responsible for education provision in Australia - all Australian governments.

As an information service, EdNA Online provides two key functions:

* a directory about education and training in Australia.
* a database of web-based resources useful for teaching and learning

In Teachers' Hands (3.85MB)   is a study funded by DEST, that aimed to identify teaching practices that lead to improved student achievement of literacy outcomes in the early years of schooling. It incorporated a research literature review, identifying effective and less effective literacy teachers and observing effective and less effective literacy teachers in action.

Beyond the Middle is a report by Alan Luke and colleagues, commissioned by DEST, about the literacy and numeracy development of students in the middle years of schooling.

* Key findings: pages 5-7
* Implications: pages 7-10
* Review of Australian literature: pages 17-28
* Review of international research: pages 28-43

Teaching Reading Report and Recommendations (1.28MB)  was produced as part of the National Inquiry into the Teaching of Literacy in 2005. The NITL Committee has drawn upon a variety of sources that include findings from local and international evidence-based research to identify best practice in the support of all children in learning to read. These findings have provided strong evidence about teaching approaches that are demonstrably effective.

Classroom Discourse Project: spoken language and literacy pedagogy in a science classroom (2MB) is a study funded by DEST, that aimed to examine the classroom discourse strategies (talking and listening) that best facilitate achievement of literacy outcomes in the upper primary context.
